Welcome to the 4th article in the ‘Why’ series.
My previous article in this series explained how to approach horses and how to put on a halter. Now, you need to understand how to lead your horse.
First, ensure you are safely dressed: wear a riding helmet, gloves and a stout pair of shoes or boots. Your safety is paramount.
Second, if you have never led a horse before, always ask a coach or experienced handler to help you.
In the last article you learned how to put on a halter and hold the lead rope in readiness to lead him out of the stable. If you are leading a horse you don’t know or you are a little cautious or the horse is excitable, always put a bridle on the horse not a halter. The bridle will give you more control and confidence when leading.
In this article I will explain about leading a quiet horse within the confines of the stable yard; that said, always remember horses are unpredictable so you do need stay aware and observant at all times - whether you know the horse or not. If in doubt, be safe and use a bridle for leading and/or handling.
When you lead then horse, you will lead from the left side (or near side) with the horse on your right. You will hold the lead rope with your right hand positioned approximately 15 centimetres (6 inches) from the horse’s chin with the back of your hand uppermost. Your left hand will hold the loose end of the rope, again with the back of the hand uppermost. Fold any loose rope in your left hand DO NOT wrap it round your hand is this is unsafe – if the horse pulls back or tries to escape, the rope could tighten round your hand and could cause a bad accident.
Ideally, your right shoulder should stay level with the horse’s shoulder as you do not want to be pulling him along – he should learn to walk forward WITH you not behind you. Do not pull him. If horses are reluctant to walk freely forward it can be a good idea to carry a whip to support your voice aids and sometimes a helper walking alongside the horse can also help.
To stop, stand up tall, simultaneously say, ‘Whoa’ and firmly take hold of the rope in your right hand and he should stop. Once he stops, reward him with a quite word and a pat on the neck.
Turning – always turn in an arc to the right; you should always walk around the horse (he should not walk round you) with him on your right, if you turn to the left, you lose control of the horse and it can be unsafe.
When leading, aways stay aware so that your feet do not get trodden on and you do not get bitten. Start by learning to lead the horse at walk and halt so you have control. Once you feel confident walking and halting, you can practice leading at trot.
